An intriguing Lamborghini Aventador prototype has been snapped without any camouflage, prompting speculation that it could be a new limited-edition model or perhaps an early mule for the supercar’s successor.

The following image was posted to Instagram by Lamborghini_Dutch and snapped by Jasper van Toorenburg and looks to have been shot at some kind of Lamborghini facility, as evidenced by the other Lamborghini models in the background. The Aventador is adorned with a host of parts that distinguish it from all other variants.

The most obvious modification is the engine cover, or rather lack thereof. Unlike all other Aventador models, this prototype doesn’t have an engine cover and instead just a decorative piece that sits directly above the engine and the X-shaped cross member. It’s not as though Lamborghini has simply removed the cover either. This looks like the finished design, indicating the 6.5-liter V12 could be in plain view just like the W16s of the Bugatti Veyron and Bugatti Chiron.

Elsewhere, the prototype has a similar exhaust layout to the SVJ but sports a custom rear bumper and diffuser. It is also lacking a large fixed wing like the SVJ and the SV that came before it. Look closely and you will also see two hood pins on the engine cover.

If we were to guess, we’d suggest this could be a prototype for a new limited edition of the Aventador. Last year, reports surfaced suggesting the Aventador’s successor may not launch until 2024, which might or might not indicate that Lamborghini has nevertheless started working on it. Most probably, though, the Italian automaker is readying yet another special model to keep customers interested in the aging supercar that originally launched in 2011.
