Amid rising number of Covid-19 cases, the epicentres of the infection are shifting from major towns to neighbouring districts and newer states. In recent weeks, districts like Solapur, Thane, Nashik, Palghar, Surat, Jalgaon and Dakshin Kannada have seen the highest number — more than 1,000 each — of containment zones. On the other hand, instances of surges in daily cases per 10 lakh population are reported from states and UTs like Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry — ranging between 190 and 249 cases (per 10 lakh population), official data reviewed showed. As on July 30, districts like Pune, Bengaluru, Thane, Mumbai, Chennai and East Godavari were leading the top 20 districts in terms of active caseloads. “Active cases have started showing a decline, led by aggressive testing and faster recoveries, and it is a good sign as this will eventually lead to a recession, but the epidemic is in different phases in different parts of the country and requires a recalibrated area-specific response, especially for cities and districts that are showing a surge,” an official said. Official sources said Bihar, Odisha, eastern UP and states in the northeast were vulnerable to the infection right now and were expected to witness a big rise in numbers unless administrations ramped up testing and contact tracing. “These states have not increased testing and the positivity rate is very high despite clear instructions from the Centre,” a health ministry official said.
