CHANDIGARH: For the second consecutive day, Punjab recorded the
highest single day surge in
Covid-19 cases by registering 1,063 cases and 23 deaths in the last 24 hours.
Fresh cases were reported from all the 22 districts, of which, 64.44% (685) cases were from six districts. Punjab's overall tally of positive cases stands at 21,930. The health department shifted 23 cases added in the August 6 tally to other states.
The virus claimed the lives of nine people in Ludhiana and three in
Amritsar. Three deaths were reported in Jalandhar and two in Fatehgarh Sahib, while one person each died in Sangrur,
Patiala, Kapurthala, Fazilka and Nawanshahr. The trend of high number of deaths is expected to continue in coming days as 29 patients in critical condition are on ventilator support while 117 have been put on oxygen support.
Situation in Ludhiana continued to be bad as it recorded the maximum number of cases for 11th days in running. Of the total cases, 296 were from Ludhiana. Of them, 36 were contacts of positive cases while 26 patients were con-infected with influenza-like illness (ILI).
Ludhiana was followed by Patiala where 122 people were tested, including 87 new cases and 32 contacts of positive cases. In Mohali 77 people were tested positive and 70 in Jalandhar. The test reports of 67 people came positive in Amritsar while 53 people were tested positive in Gurdaspur, 49 in
Bathinda, 41 in Pathankot, 37 in Barnala and 32 each in Sangrur and Ropar.
Tarn Taran added 29 cases to the overall tally while Kapurthala and Fatehgarh Sahib contributed 26 cases each. From Faridkot 19 cases were reported while 16 from Fazilka, 15 from Mansa, 14 from Moga, 13 from Muktsar, 11 from Nawanshahr. With seven cases, Ferozepur was the only district to have cases in single figures.
As many as 381 people were discharged after recovering, taking the tally of patients discharged 14,040.
