12 more die of Covid in Assam, positivity rate now below 5%

GUWAHATI: The death toll due to Covid-19 in Assam has climbed to 121 with the state registering 12 more fatalities — six each on Tuesday and Wednesday, However, the positivity rate in the state has gone below below 5%, showing indications that the virus transmission probably has just started to slow down. On July 29, the positivity rate was over 7%.

Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Sad to share the demise of 6 #COVID patients.” The deceased persons are between 81 years and 35 years of age.
On Tuesday, the state recorded the highest single-day spike of 2,886 cases so far.
This spike happened because the state laboratories tested a record 59,064 samples in the day. But despite this, the positivity rate dipped to over 4% after hovering above 5% since August 1.
Guwahati reports 550 fresh cases
The state’s mortality rate has further slipped by 0.01% to 0.23%.
Most of the new cases were reported from Guwahati where 550 people tested positive, followed by 294 from Kamrup (Rural), 213 from Nagaon and 201 from Dibrugarh.
“In pursuit of our commitment to contain Covid-19 infection in our state, we will continue with massive testing across the state for the next 10 days,” Sarma tweeted.
There are 14,615 active cases in the state at present. So far, 33428 have recovered and three migrated out of Assam. Till date, 1,921 personnel of the Assam Police have tested positive. Of them, four have died and 1,309 recovered, with 443 rejoining duty.
