Mormugao council workers threaten to strike work over salary issue

Vasco: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) workers have threatened to strike the work from next Monday if the municipal authority fails to disburse their salaries for the month of July.

Some of the workers disclosed that the municipal authority failed to disburse the salaries in time for the month of July.

“We, therefore, have decided to strike the work from next Monday. A strike notice has been given to the chairperson and chief officer,” stated the workers.

When contacted, MMC chairperson Nandadeep Raut said that “the financial position of the MMC is weak due to the prevailing COVID-19 crisis in the municipal jurisdiction. We have no funds to disburse the salaries of the workers for the month of July as the revenue flow has stopped.”

“The MMC needs nearly Rs 1.30 crore to disburse salaries of around 300 workers,” said Raut and further maintained that the MMC has decided to disburse salaries of Rs 14 lakh to around 70 to 80 daily-wage workers on August 7.

“The two major oil companies which are in the port town are supposed to pay long pending dues of Rs 25 crore, but till date the municipal authorities have not received the payments,” he said.
