MUMBAI: A portion of a retaining wall on a hill slope near the Hanging Garden collapsed during heavy rainfall on Thursday, causing several tree collapses and a landslide in the area at Kemps Corner. No injury was reported in the incident.
The BMC has blocked the stretch for traffic movement and have called a consultant to examine the area for further action. Crack has been developed on a road outside the garden.
Officials stated that the BG Kher Road (Ridge Road) at hill slope passes from Hanging Gardens, Kamala Nehru Park and Tower of Silence. There was a long retaining wall on the side of the road.
Down the hill, is the key road near the Kemps Corner bridge. BMC officials stated that after the collapse of the retaining wall portion, around 10 trees on the slope also collapsed causing a landslide which blocked the key road near the Kemps Corner bridge.
BMC, with the help of the police blocked the road near the bridge for traffic movement. BMC officials stated that they are clearing the debris and are trying to open one stretch of the road till afternoon.
Assistant municipal commissioner Prashant Gaikwad said, “We were informed that there was some problem at the BG Kher Road, after which we closed the stretch for the traffic on early hours. After a few hours, the portion of the retaining wall collapsed causing the incident.”
It's been raining heavily since morning for a third consecutive day, causing flooding in many other areas and traffic diversions.
BMC said that waterlogging has been reported at Shaikh Mistri Dargah Rd, BPT Colony Sky Walk, Sakkar Panchayat, Khetwadi, Maharshi Karve Road, Nair Hospital, C. P. Tank, Masjid Bunder areas of Island city. And Postal Colony (Chembur), Pragati Niwas(Govandi) of eastern suburb of Mumbai.
The movement of vehicles has been diverted at Gandhi Market (Sion), Shell Colony Road via Chembur Naka, Mumbai Central, Gol Deval, Nair Hospital Road via Boman Behram Marg and Sant Rohidas Chowk due to waterlogging.
