The accused in police net
CHANDIGARH: The 30-year-old woman, who had delivered twins, of which one was stillborn, has recorded a statement with the Sector 31 police team against the accused, Sarabjit Kaur, an ASHA worker. The woman’s infant son was recovered from the child lifter gang. The city police team has gone to Malerkotla in Sangrur district for investigation.
Neha Yadav, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) south division, has formed a SIT to investigate the matter.

The accused, Sarabjit Kaur, had taken away the two-day-old infant on the pretext of taking him to doctors as the baby was weak. However, the accused later did not pick up the calls of the infant’s mother. The accused reached the city, with four other accused from Malerkotla in Sangrur district on August 3, to sell the infant boy to a decoy customer of police for Rs 4 lakh.
Sources revealed that newborn’s mother did not lodge any complaint against the accused in Sangrur as she was poor and illiterate.
All the five accused - Amarjit Singh (29), constable, Balongi police station, Mohali; Mandeep Singh (35), a resident of Ludhiana; Sarabjit Kaur (40), a resident of Sangrur; Kuldeep Kaur (32), a resident of Patiala; and Bhavna (32), a resident of Sector 45, were arrested from near the Chandigarh-Zirakpur barrier.
The police had also recovered a 11-day-old baby girl on the disclosure of the gang. The gang had sold a baby girl to a couple in the city for Rs 1 lakh. The gang used to sell baby girls for Rs 80, 000 to Rs 1 lakh and the rate for the baby boy was Rs 4 lakh.
The informer was Ravinder Kumar alias Sabi, a resident of Sector 37. The police made him contact the gang to purchase a baby boy. The deal was finalised for Rs 4 lakh. Kumar demanded the boy on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, making an excuse that he did not have a son and his daughter wanted to tie rakhi to her brother. Initially, the gang was unwilling to come to the city, but later changed its mind.
All the accused were in the constable’s car, who was driving the vehicle.
The police have registered a case under Sections 370 (human trafficking) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused and obtained their seven-day police remand after producing them before a local court for further interrogation.
