The tree -- Thooongumoonji maram (Albizia saman) – is said to be around 100 years old. It is situated in public place outside a private property.
The property owner said the tree was a hindrance to erect electricity cables. But Trichy Corporation officials said there was no hinderance.
On Thursday morning, people in the area spotted men trying to trim the branches of the tree with a machine. A group of youths and residents protested the move.
Corporation officials, who reached the spot on hearing about the protest, seized the machine.
“Such acts by private property owners show that they are not willing to safeguard the city's green cover," said V C Ranjith Kumar, coordinator of Veera Vivekanandar Youth Forum.
Officials said discussions would be held over taking action against private property owners who fell such trees.
