A 44-year-old television actor was found dead at his home in Mumbai on Wednesday. The police suspect that he hanged himself.
The deceased, Sameer Sharma, lived alone in the rented apartment. The police said the building’s watchman was patrolling the premises on Wednesday night when he noticed Sharma hanging from the ceiling in his kitchen. He immediately alerted the police.
Police officials took Sharma to a hospital nearby, where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival. “From the state of decomposition of the body, it appears that he died two days before he was found,” said an officer, adding that no suicide note was found at the apartment, which Sharma had moved into recently.
The police have contacted Sameer Sharma’s family to understand what could have led him to kill himself. Sharma, who grew up in Delhi, had acted in the popular television shows Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki and the 2009 Hindi film Hasee Toh Phasee. He was last seen in the show Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke.
On July 26, Sharma had written a lengthy post on Instagram about mental health titled “Read this if you cared about Sushant Singh Rajput”.
Sameer Sharma wrote that persons who have never been through mental health issues would not know what it feels like. “Depression is a very lonely disease and a highly misunderstood one. Because it’s not like cancer or diabetes or any other medical condition, which can be physically diagnosed,” he said.
He added that those who reach out for help are admonished and asked to shake it off. Sharma further wrote that those who take their own lives do not do so out of social or financial pressure or because they are weak. “He does it because the devil just doesn’t stop screaming, a scream which causes a pain so unbearable yet completely inexplicable.”
