MUMBAI: Intense rainfall saw Devindar Walmiki, an India hockey player, take to Twitter on Wednesday evening to call for help after his 10-by-12-square-foot, one-room home in Niranjan building, Marine Lines, flooded and "there was no help coming in from the BMC".
"It's an emergency. It's a humble request to @mybmc@AUThackeray@Iamrahulkanal to kindly help us out with the water logging at house in Marine Lines. My family tried reaching out to the local ward but no ones ready to come, As I'm in Netherlands for my hockey matches," tweeted Devindar, after a prod from his brother Yuvraj Walmiki, who too has played for India.
"I made 10-15 calls to the BMC from 2.30pm. Our compound was flooded with waist-high water. I myself threw out at least 250 buckets of water from my house. When all our awards and trophies started getting wet, I sent an SOS to my brother Devindar, who is in Holland, to tweet and seek help. I kept a few essentials in someone's car because our vehicle had floated a fair bit away from our house. I have seen this kind of flooding for the first time. Ultimately, I too tweeted for help but no one came," Yuvraj told TOI. "Honestly, for the first time in my life, I regret being a hockey player. If I was even a Ranji cricketer, there would have been a beeline of people trying to help me. It's been nine years since I was promised a house. I threw out water from my house for five hours," he said.
