SHIVAMOGGA: Your old smartphone locked away in a cupboard of your house could help a poor student log in to online classes. Not just phones, unused laptops, tablets and TV sets will come to the rescue of students who can't afford a device of their own to attend the virtual classes.

There have been instances of families in Karnataka pledging jewellery or land documents to buy a smartphone or a TV set so that their children can join the classes.

Nagendra Sagar, a farmer from Chippalli village in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district, about 300km from Bengaluru, noticed many students didn't have a smartphone though the internet connectivity was good in the village. He launched a campaign, 'donate your used smartphone', on social media. Within hours, two citizens came forward to donate used smartphones - and money - to support students.

The idea took birth when Sagar saw a farm labourer's daughter, studying SSLC at a government-aided school, couldn't join the online classes since she didn't have a smartphone. "I asked her to use my computer. Later, I found out many students were similarly missing out on the class," he said.
