AHMEDABAD: A 23-year-old student of a college affiliated to Gujarat Technological University has been arrested for uploading personal information of nearly 1,200 students on several websites. Cybercrime officials are on the lookout for the main accused who allegedly hacked into the varsity's website and stole the data.

The youth has been identified as Mohit Chauthani, who hails from Junagadh and is a student of 6th semester IT engineering at RC Technical College in Ahmedabad.

The Gujarat Technological University system was hacked on Thursday and personal information of Bachelor of Engineering (BE) students, including their photographs, PAN card, Aadhaar card and Voter ID card details, were leaked. GTU registered a complaint with the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell. "During investigation, it came to light that the leaked data had been uploaded to several websites. We traced it to Chauthan who was arrested from Junagadh," said Cybercrime officials.

The youth reportedly got the data through a Twitter handle. The IT student created several websites and uploaded the data onto it, said officials.

When asked about motive, Chauthani told cops that examinations in all universities and colleges had been postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic. "However, GTU was adamant on conducting the exam. To ensure that GTU also postpones exam, he reportedly made the websites and uploaded the data," said cops. Cybercrime PI M N Desai said, "We are trying to find out more about the main accused who hacked the website and are also investigating the Twitter handle that shared the data online as well as the main website on which the data was uploaded."

The Twitter handle through which the data was initially shared has been deleted, cops added. GTU had conducted a pre-test on July 29. The next day, GTU officials got to know that data of students had been leaked.

700 fail to take GTU exam due to glitches

More than 700 students of degree, diploma and masters courses at Gujarat Technological University (GTU) could not appear for final year online exam on Tuesday either due to faulty camera, a problem with the password or having downloaded the app multiple times. The varsity may now have to hold a special exam for these students in the second week of August. GTU officials said students do not log in using latest password and also get confused between 0 and O.
