Former Legacy WA officer to be sentenced after stealing thousands from charity

The former executive officer of Legacy WA will learn his fate on Thursday morning when he is sentenced for fraud and stealing offences which saw him siphon more than $9000 from the charity set up to help war widows and their children.

Robert Mathew, formerly known as Robert Ratkovcic, pleaded guilty to all offences, most of which involved buying personal goods with Legacy WA funds.

The court heard Mathew used charity money to pay for more than $3600 worth of items from retailers like JB Hi-Fi and Woolworths, including headphones, grocery items and a $1925 sofa, and also paid for visits to The Camfield and Balmoral pubs with money that was not his.

Twice the former submariner withdrew sums of $1000 from the Legacy account and, when investigations were made into money missing from a fundraiser held by the charity, $3877 was found to have been taken from the safe kept in Mathew's office.

All money stolen from Legacy WA had since been repaid by Mathew.

A delay in Wednesday's court proceedings put sentencing off until Thursday, with Mathew's lawyer telling the magistrate his client was "extremely anxious".

Defence submissions have not yet been heard, but the court is expected to be provided with references in support of Mathew prior to sentencing.
