Pune: A jail employee has been booked for abusing and threatening the Deputy Superintendent of Yerawada Central Prison. The jail employee has alleged that despite knowing that he has a one-year-old son at home, his seniors were asking him to do night duty at the Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) which treats COVID-19 patients coming from all over the districts.
The jail employee has been identified as Jaykumar Somnath Shinde (39), residing at the Government Residential Quarters in Yerawada, A case has been filed against him by Chandramani Arjun Indurkar (55), a resident of Jail Officers Government Quarters in Yerawada. Shinde has been booked under section 353 (assault or criminal force against any public servant or with intent to prevent or deter that person from discharging his duty) of the Indian Penal Code. The incident took place on Monday (August 3) at around 1.45 pm at Yerawada Bazaar in front of the Shri Krishna medical store.

Shinde and one more employee Mahadev Mhaske were supposed to keep a watch on one accused named Prakash Phale who was admitted to the Sassoon hospital for medical treatment. Shinde was worried about spending the whole night at Sassoon hospital where patients from all over the district are coming for treatment of the contagious COVID-19 disease. Shinde has a one-year-old child at home and was agitated over the back-to-back allotment of his duties being assigned at the COVID hospital by his seniors.
Shinde confronted Indurkar at the Yerawada bazaar on Monday afternoon and asked why he was being assigned duty at the Sassoon hospital. Shinde started abusing Indurkar during the conversation. When Indurkar asked him to behave as he was his senior, Shinde threatened him of dire consequences if he gets the coronavirus infection while performing duty at Sassoon hospital and if his child also gets affected due to it. Indurkar later filed a complaint at Yerawada police station against Shinde. Police Sub-Inspector Shantmal Kollure is investigating the case.
