Sushant death: CBI takes over probe
NEW DELHI: A day after the Bihar government requested for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, the Centre has accepted the state’s request. The CBI, which falls under the Union Home Ministry, will now take over the probe.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Wednesday stated in the Supreme Court that the Centre has accepted the request floated by the Nitish Kumar government recommending a CBI inquiry.
A bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy observed that truth behind the 34-year-old Rajput's death should come out. "Truth should come out so far as actor's death is concerned," the SC bench said, as reported by news agency
PTI.
The top court also instructed the Mumbai Police to file a status report on the probe conducted so far in the 'Kai Po Che!' actor's death within three days.
The investigation has been handed over to the central agency after a high-pitched territorial battle broke out between the Mumbai Police and its Bihar counterpart. A team from Bihar, led by Patna SP Vinay Tiwari, had reached Mumbai on Monday. The team claimed that they were "forcibly quarantined" and prevented from carrying out the probe.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court also heard a petition filed by model-actress Rhea Chakraborty who was in a relationship with the deceased actor. The apex court has directed the states of Maharashtra and Bihar, and Rajput's father, K K Singh, to file replies on Chakraborty's plea. In her plea, she had sought the transfer of an FIR lodged in Patna by Rajput's father who had accused her of abetting his suicide. The septuagenarian had also accused her of financial misappropriations.
The 34-year-old actor was found hanging from the ceiling of his apartment in suburban Bandra in Mumbai on June 14.
