Karnataka: Higher discharge in coastal districts lifts gloom amidst slump in fresh cases, 12 deaths

MANGALURU/UDUPI: Karnataka's coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi - amidst a marginal tapering of new Covid-19 positive cases on Wednesday - saw an encouraging upward trend with discharge of 206 patient’s post-treatment.
The districts saw a combined reduction of 73 fresh cases at 322 as against 395 reported on Tuesday. Out of the 322 cases, Udupi tallied 173 cases and DK 149 to take their total positive cases to 5141 and 6542, respectively.
Despite the above positivity, the districts also recorded a dozen Covid19 related deaths with DK accounting for 10 of those. This continuing trend took the tally of deaths in DK to 190 and Udupi to 44. Seven of the 10 deaths were patients from Mangaluru, one each from Puttur and Belthangady and one from outside DK district. Comorbidities were found in all deceased. The two victims in Udupi were from Udupi taluk and had comorbidities too.
In Udupi, influenza like illness (ILI) contributed to the bulk of 173 cases at 73, source of infection in 51 persons is under investigation, 46 are primary contacts and three domestic travellers. Udupi taluk tallied 76 fresh cases, Kundapur 57 and Karkala 39 and one was from outside Udupi. In DK, 64 were diagnosed as ILI cases, 12 were patients with severe acute respiratory infection, 27 are primary contacts and source of infection in 41 is being traced.
In a related development, Dakshina Kannada district minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari who was in self-isolation after his recent meeting with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa who tested positive for coronavirus, tweeted that his test reports had come negative and that he will be back to perform his (public) duties with cooperation of all concerned. Former MLC Ivan D’Souza and his wife who tested positive on Saturday are presently undergoing treatment.
