Sindri: Three
police personnel, including the woman sub-inspector of Barwadda police station in
Dhanbad, were placed under suspension for dereliction of duty and misbehaving with a doctor and para-medical staff engaged in sample collections for Covid-19 tests at Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) late on Monday night.
Announcing their suspension, Dhanbad SSP Akhilesh B Varior said the three — sub-inspector Shweta Kumari, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Satish Kumar and constable Mahesh — will face departmental action based on an an enquiry report submitted by DSP (law and order) Mukesh Kumar.
Six police personnel, including the three, had visited PMCH to submit their swab samples on Monday. After waiting for a while, they approached the para-medical staff and asked them to collect their samples before those who were already in queue before them.
Their demand was refused and the verbal dual that ensued soon turned into a scuffle with the cops assaulting the medical staff, including Dr L B Tudu. The entire medical staff at PMCH stopped work in protest against the attack and demanded action against the cops. The matter was reported to senior administrative officials and the DSP was sent to probe the matter. After going through the CCTV footage, he submitted his enquiry report to the Varior.
Varior said, "There is no denying the fact that frontline healthcare staff have been working under pressure through the onslaught of the pandemic. The police is also working with dedication, but we have to keep the health workers motivated and treat them with respect.” He added that the action against three should be a message for both the police and the people that misbehavior with health workers will not be tolerated.
