• A man allegedly stabbed a cash van driver and took off with three cash boxes in Daveyton on Monday.
• Despite being shot, he allegedly hijacked a taxi and fled before realising the cash boxes were empty.
• He was arrested and will appear in court on Wednesday.

A 57-year-old man was apprehended following what police call a cash-in-transit heist "resembling a Hollywood movie" in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, on Monday.

According to police spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, a security cash van arrived at a petrol station in Daveyton to collect cash.

The driver remained in the armoured vehicle and, while waiting, the man approached the stationary van. The driver suspected that something was wrong and he warned the man not to approach the van.

"Without any warning, the suspect allegedly stabbed the driver on his back and managed to take off with three cash boxes. The other crew member was alerted and immediately chased and shot the suspect," Mulamu said.

Despite being wounded, the robber managed to hijack a fully loaded taxi and threatened the driver, who was forced to speed off.

Cash boxes empty

"[The suspect] later abandoned the taxi after he realised that the cash boxes were empty. He fled on foot and hijacked another vehicle from a mechanic's workshop.

"The police, with the help of community members, managed to apprehend him in Daveyton. He was taken to the local hospital for the gunshot wound and was later discharged."

The man will appear in the Daveyton Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder and hijacking.
