Heartless thieves have stolen a woman's $300 online grocery delivery from outside her front door.

Melbourne author Anna Spargo-Ryan shared her dismay on Twitter, explaining she even met the Coles driver at the door and asked him to put the bags down before going back inside for a quick Telehealth appointment.

The mother-of-two wrote: 'When the appointment ended, they were gone. Literally at my front door, lights on in the house, cars in driveway.'

But after posting the story Ms Spargo-Ryan was overwhelmed by the response from her community, and the supermarket which promptly refunded her order.

'Friends, Coles just called me at 7:30pm and reimbursed me for the missing order even though it was really my fault for not bringing it in fast enough,' she wrote.

She added love heart emojis and the comment 'My chocolate is not here but it is in my future once again.'

Under Victoria's stage 4 coronavirus restrictions, only supermarkets, bottle shops, petrol stations, pharmacies, post offices and banks are still open but people are encouraged to shop online instead of going out when they can.

The strict measures are in place due to the rise in COVID-19 infections, with the state reporting an additional 439 cases and 11 deaths in the past 24 hours.

ABC Mornings Presenter Virginia Trioli was one of many followers who offered to help Ms Spargo-Ryan after the brazen theft.

The author thanked her and responded: 'Thank you so much, Coles sorted it but the floods of generosity here have been amazing.'

'Thank you for offering to replace them,' she wrote to another follower. 'There are people who need it much more than I do but I really appreciate the kindness.'

She wasn't the only person to have their shopping stolen, a neighbourhood Facebook group revealing someone in the next street also had their overnight food delivery stolen.

'I guess this is going to be a thing that happens during a time when many people are forced into desperate vulnerability,' she tweeted.
