*With Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa testing positive for Covid-19 and likely to rest even after he is discharged from hospital, the cabinet reshuffle — expected before August 10 — may be deferred by three weeks.
*Hundreds of doctors in several hospitals of the city who are on Covid duty are handed a nutritious and hearty meal twice a day by a Bengaluru-based volunteer group for over a month now. The group, Doctor’s Kitchen, took birth after many volunteers, during interactions with heads of Covid-19 government hospitals, realized that a decent meal was a luxury for doctors given time and resource crunch.
*Already struggling in the fight against the pandemic, the administrative machinery has been dealt a body blow, what with chief minister BS Yediyurappa, two ministers and several senior officials indisposed after testing positive for the virus. Besides them, at least five ministers and a dozen officials who held meetings with Yediyurappa over the past few days are now in home quarantine.
*With cases surging past the 17,000-mark, the heathcare system in North Karnataka districts, mediocre in the best of times, is now crumbling under the strain of the pandemic. Many severely ill patients do not have access to ICU or ventilator support, while even beds for the moderately ill are at a premium and ambulances in short supply.
