Civic polls: Aam Aadmi Party to restructure Delhi unit

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is going to initiate the process of restructuring its organization in Delhi having its eyes firmly fixed on the forthcoming municipal corporation elections.
Organisational changes will be made at the assembly level, district level, ward level, polling station level, and at the booth level to strengthen the party with efficient local leaders who can contribute to making the party stronger besides serving people better.
The restructuring will commence from August 5. Workers in whose areas the party performed well in the assembly polls, held earlier this year, would be rewarded.
“The party is going to restructure its Delhi state-level organization. The restructuring will be carried out at assembly, district, ward, polling station, and booth level. The process will start on August 5 and will continue till August 20,” party Delhi convener Gopal Rai said on Tuesday.
AAP has a strong organisation in Delhi. It won the assembly election early this year with a brute majority winning 62 of the 70 seats despite the BJP mounting a very aggressive election campaign. The results reflected the party’s strong grip because it had put up a far better fight in 2015 --- winning 67 out of 70 seats.
The party however could not defeat the BJP in the 2017 municipal elections. The municipal elections would be held in 2022 and the party wants to keep its organisation in best shape before the municipal polls.
“The performance of everyone in the assembly elections held in February 2020, ranging from a volunteer to office bearers will be reviewed and those with praiseworthy performances will be given priority. At the same time, those who played a significant role during Covid-19 crisis in ration and food distribution, in creating awareness about proper sanitization and ensuring social distancing are being considered for new responsibilities to build a strong volunteer organization," said Rai.
The AAP leader said that the process will be carried out by the top leadership as well as the assembly level functionaries. "Under this process, the assembly observers will submit a report on their assembly to the top leadership, and similarly, based on the information received from various sources, the party will decide on re-positioning the old people and giving new responsibilities to young members," Rai said.
