Mumbai rains: 230 mm rainfall in 10 hours; half of August’s average rain in less than four days

Mumbai reported a 230 mm rainfall within 10 hours of non-stop rainfall on Tuesday

Mumbai: Mumbai reported a 230 mm rainfall within 10 hours of non-stop rainfall on Tuesday. Iqbal Singh Chahal, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner told ANI, admitting that a flood-like situation had been created in Mumbai. Mumbai received half of August’s average rain in less than four days.

Talking to ANI Iqbal Singh Chahal, said, "The downpour started around 7 pm last night and slowed down around five to six am today morning. In the 10-hour downpour, 230 mm of rainfall was recorded in Mumbai. The Mithi river had swelled up in the morning because of the heavy rains and went above the prescribed danger mark of 27 meters. In the morning it had gone up to 34 meters and we had started to evacuate people in the low-lying slum areas. The water levels have come down to 24, so we have ceased evacuation for now.”

Over 163 pumps were being utilised to ease the flood in various parts of the city.

Meanwhile, a high tide hit Mumbai on Tuesday as predicted by the India Meteorological Department. A red alert has been sounded for many districts in Maharashtra including Mumbai, Raigad, Thane for next two days for extremely heavy rainfall. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already alerted all concerned departments including BEST, Adani Electricity, BEST and advised people not to go near any beach or low lying areas and suggested to stay inside their homes. Tides waves of around 4.51 metres were predicted amid the heavy rains.

The IMD has also warned that intense to very intense rainfall is likely to continue in many parts of Mumbai for next three hours.

Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray on Tuesday visited flooded areas of Mumbai to monitor the ground situation. He also requested Mumbaikars to stay home.
