RAIPUR: A 45-year-old woman being taken to hospital died on the road in Chhattisgarh’s Balrampur after police allegedly refused to let them pass from one district to another without “proper papers”.
The husband pleaded with the police and showed them a hospital slip and prescriptions, but they refused to budge. The couple turned back and the woman died within half an hour. Police denied the two were turned away. Some reports said the cops asked for an e-pass, but police say it is not required for travel within the state.
The woman was suffering from high fever, cough and cold for a week. Her husband, Ramadhar Panika, hired a vehicle to take her to the district hospital in Ambikapur. They had to cross Surajpur district border, where they were stopped by police at a checkpoint. Ramadhar’s pleas went in vain and they had to to turn back. The woman died just 10 km from her village. Surajpur collector Rambir Sharma said he has ordered an inquiry.
