L MuruganCHENNAI: BJP state president L Murugan on Tuesday said students are willing to learn an additional language and urged the Tamil Nadu government to encourage them.
In a statement, Murugan said, “Several sections of people have accepted the new education policy (NEP) meant for improving the standard of education from primary level. Everyone welcomed the move to make mother tongue compulsory.”
Murugan’s statement comes a day after chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said the state would continue its two-language policy and would not accept the Centre’s three-language policy.
Stating that CBSE and matriculation schools in the in Tamil Nadu are teaching various languages, Murugan said government school students are denied the opportunity to learn one more language in addition.
“Are we becoming a hindrance to students’ interest to learn Hindi or any other regional language,” he asked.
Murugan clarified that the new policy was not imposing any language and that everyone was aware of it.
“Wherever Prime Minister Narendra Modi goes, he speaks high about Tamil and encourages students to learn the language,” he said.
He urged people to not oppose NEP that is aimed at the overall development of students.
