The West Bengal government on Monday formed a six-member committee to look into the merits of the new National Education Policy (NEP) before taking a call on implementing it in the state.
State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee had earlier criticised the policy — approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29 – alleging it was “copied from education systems of foreign countries”.
On Monday, Chatterjee said, “As a political party, we have our reservations regarding the NEP, 2020. We have formed a six-member committee that will examine the NEP’s merit.”
The committee comprises TMC MP Sougata Roy, Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das, Rabindra Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Roy Chowdhury, West Bengal syllabus committee chairman Avik Majumdar, educationist Pabitra Sarkar and Indologist Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri. They have been asked to submit their report by August 15.
“Besides, there are various teachers’ organisations in our state. We are seeking their opinion as well… They can send their opinion via email by August 15,” Chatterjee added.
The new policy, which replaced the 34-year old National Policy on Education (NPE), has proposed sweeping changes.
Chatterjee termed the new policy “unilateral”.
“The state government was not consulted… We would have registered our reservations. But no one from Bengal was included in the committee that formulated the NEP,” added Chatterjee.
