Gurgaon: Three cops, including an ASI and a constable, were suspended on Sunday, two days after a meat supplier from Mewat was beaten up by a group of vigilantes in the city in front of policemen for allegedly carrying beef.
Police also arrested one more person, Mahesh.
The incident happened on Friday when the victim, Lukman, was carrying meat from Nuh to his shop in Sadar Bazaar. Lukman was beaten up twice, once near the mosque in Sadar Bazaar and then in Badshapur.
According to police, the ASI and the two other cops were stationed at a checkpost near the incident spot. “They were suspended as they failed to perform their duties,” said a senior police official.
On Saturday, the station house officer of Badshapur police station was also attached to the police lines for dereliction of duty. A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the accused beating up the victim and the cops not taking action despite being present.
Police commissioner KK Rao said anyone trying to disturb peace and harmony will not be spared. “We will not tolerate such behaviour. Strict action will be taken against the culprits. Police officers will also face action for dereliction of duty,” he said.
Meanwhile, the arrested accused, Mahesh claimed that the men thought that Lukman was transporting beef. He confirmed that he is an acquaintance of Pradeep Yadav, another accused in the case who was arrested on Saturday from Vatika Chowk.
