Covid-19: Gujarat death toll crosses 2,500; last 500 recorded in 576 hours

AHMEDABAD: With 22 deaths recorded in 24 hours ending 5pm on Sunday, Gujarat’s death toll due to Covid-19 rose to 2,509. With the update, Gujarat became the fifth Indian state after Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to cross the mark. The last 500 deaths took place in 24 days or 576 hours, pointing at nearly one death every hour since July 9.
The deaths included 11 from Surat, six from Ahmedabad, and one each from Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Junagadh and Kutch. With the update, Ahmedabad’s total toll reached 1,609 whereas for Surat the number was 446.
In the 24 hours, the state also added 1,009 positive cases, the lowest in 14 days. With the update, the stat’s tally reached 64,684. The new cases included 258 from Surat, 151 from Ahmedabad, 98 from Vadodara and 85 from Rajkot.
Gujarat recorded discharge of 974 patients, taking the total to 47,561. The discharges include 195 from Surat, 147 from Banaskantha, 133 from Rajkot and 109 from Ahmedabad.
With the update, the share of active patients is 22.6% at 14,614. The share of deceased and discharged patients is 3.9% and 73.5%.
Gujarat in 24 hours carried out 19,769 tests to find new Covid-19 positive cases, taking the total to 8.34 lakh. The state health department claimed that the state is carrying out 304 tests per day per million population.
As on Monday evening, Gujarat had 4.81 lakh persons under quarantine, out of which 4.8 lakh are under home quarantine.
