With warm wooden finishes, plenty of greenery, and eco-friendly interiors, the designer's crib in the city echoes her green living sensibilities and features some stellar corners. Take the full tour below
Founder of one of India’s biggest fashion houses, designer Anita Dongre’s brand has grown at breakneck speed since its conception 30 years ago. Fast forward to present day, the vegan designer, who firmly stands by her green living sensibilities which also feed into her production processes, has captured the attention of national and international audiences alike. “From moving the factory, to eating sustainably, to growing my own vegetables organically, it’s a whole lifestyle shift that happened over the last decade. It’s reflecting more in my work now, but it first started with me wanting to become sustainable personally,” Dongre relayed in an interview.
Dongre lives with her husband Pravin Dongre, son Yash Dongre, daughter-in-law Benaisha Kharas, mother-in-law, and their pet dog Bella, in the city of Mumbai. During the working week, the designer moves closer to her company headquarters in Navi Mumbai for a more tranquil environment and to reduce time spent in travel. “I feel grateful to be working with the family and enjoying the space in my new sustainable home," she recently shared in an interview with Architectural Digest India. Though Dongre herself is known to be a private person, Kharas is an image consultant and an inspirational speaker and regularly gives us glimpses of the family’s home through her social media posts. From the designer’s outdoor workspace to her lavish living room, take the full tour of Anita Dongre’s residence below.
A floor-to-ceiling wooden grid-like shelf spans across the many storeys of Dongre’s home, towering over the ground floor almost like a skyscraper filled with books. Dongre recently revealed her current favourite book in the interview with AD, “As an avid reader, there is nothing I enjoy more than delving into a book’s pages. Among the ones I have bookmarked the most and gained the most from are the works of Swami Parthasarathy. A personal favourite of mine is his Vedanta Treatise.” Apart from books, this installation also holds other curios such as glass bottles filled with plants. A pistachio green wall features behind the shelf on the ground floor, adjacent to the staircase leading to the first level, and ochre-coloured glossy marble makes up the floor.
A casual sitting area with an ivory couch and a dark Persian rug is nestled on one side of the bookcase, while another neighbouring corner holds a wooden side table topped off with a religious sculpture, as well as a bright armchair with colourful patterns.
Another highlight of the designer’s green home is her nature-filled workstation, set in her garden. A long sleek wooden table with a matching bench takes centre stage, surrounded by plenty of tall, leafy plants.
Like the rest of their home, Yash Dongre and Benaisha Kharas’s bedroom has a warm, earthy feel to it, owing to dark wooden floors and matching interiors. A grey headboard for the bed synchronises perfectly with the muted palette of the space, and a white cutwork bed cover adds texture to the picture-perfect space.

Anita Dongre’s classic living room is reflective of her rich, traditional aesthetic. An intricately carved rattan sofa topped with bright turquoise seat cushions and brightly patterned pillows features next to a low wooden coffee table. A teal rug with bristles matches the sofa and adds even more colour to the vivid scape.

Another striking corner of the house features an edgy, modern centre table with a black, thorn-like base and a wooden countertop. Lots of potted indoor plants pepper the space. Glass windows and abundant sunlight remain constant elements of this floor.
Next to Anita Dongre's living room sits her snug dining area, brightened up by floor-to-ceiling glass doors that bring in plenty of sunlight into the space. Rounded ivory chairs surround a sleek circular wooden table. The highlight of this room, however, is the large, very intricate artwork in the background, which showcases a quaint jungle scene of elephants, monkeys and exotic birds.
