COVID-19 Pune: Wadgaon Jama Masjid converted to quarantine centre facility

Pune: The Jama Masjid in Wadgaon has been handed over to the local administration for using it as a quarantine centre for treating COVID-19 patients in the locality. A letter of resolution in this regard was handed over to Maval Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sunil Shelke by the office bearers of the Jama Masjid management committee. The mosque has a seating capacity of 80 to 100 beds.

The Jama Masjid management committee has taken this decision given the COVID-19 outbreak. The decision was taken on the eve of Bakra Eid. MLA Shelke has welcomed this move by the Muslim community.

Jama Masjid committee members Rashid Shaikh, Aftab Syed, Abdul Bhai Shaikh, Yunus Bhai Momin, Salil Tamboli, Maulana Mujib Shaikh and Raji Ibrahim Bhai Shaikh handed the letter of resolution to MLA Shelke on Saturday.

The letter given by the committee says, "The prevalence of coronavirus is increasing day by day. Maval taluka also has a reported large number of COVID-19 cases. Considering the outbreak situation in the area, we feel that the Jama Masjid site should also be used as a quarantine facility for treating patients. The mosque has a seating capacity of about 80 to 100 beds which can be useful for providing good healthcare facilities to COVID-19 patients."

Meanwhile, some Muslim brothers in Pune city celebrated the Bakra Eid by donating blood instead of sacrificing a goat according to the age-old tradition. The event was held in a hall at Sane Guruji Smarak in Pune.

Bakra Eid is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country. On this day, Muslims celebrate the festival by sacrificing a goat. However, some Muslim brothers decided to bring reforms and donated blood instead of sacrificing a goat.

Due to COVID-19 outbreak, a large number of patients are under treatment at various hospitals in the city. There is a need to donate blood and plasma for making it available for COVID-19 patients. Considering this need of the society, some Muslim brothers in Pune city decided to donate blood instead of sacrificing goats this year. This unique initiative was organised by Muslim Satyashodhan Mandal.
