1961 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster Is Expected To Fetch Close To $1 Million

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is one of the German brand’s icons and one will be auctioned off by Gooding & Company during an online event running from August 3-7.

This model is a 1961 example and was one of roughly 270 fitted with disc brakes and the iron-block engine before Mercedes-Benz introduced an alloy-block version of the 300 SL’s engine. The car was most recently purchased by a postwar Mercedes collector in 1993 and was one of two that he bought for his sons.

Adorning the exterior of the car used to be a White Gray finish, but the seller decided to repaint it in a period-correct color of Ivory. In addition, it was outfitted with a new navy blue top.

Although the car has never been fully restored, the listing states that it has been “religiously maintained” and on an almost annual basis has been handed over to the well-respected Paul Russel and Company for routine servicing, maintenance, improvements, and repairs.

Complementing the Ivory paint is a red leather interior. There is also an Ivory-colored dashboard and shift knob as well as a classic three-spoke steering wheel with a wooden rim. The listing reveals the car will also be sold with its original hardtop that remains in a crate from the factory.

The auction house expects this lovely Mercedes-Benz to sell for between $850,000 and $950,000.
