Hospital issues statement on death of UP minister Kamala Rani Varun

Mrs. Kamla Rani, Honourable Cabinet Minister, Government of UP, 62 -year-old female suffering with fever, cough and breathlessness was admitted to SGPGI after being detected COVID positive on 18.07.2020. She also had comorbidities in form of Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and hypothyroidism. She had bilateral pneumonia at admission and was shifted to ICU on the day of admission itself because of high oxygen requirement. Later she required non-invasive ventilation (NIV) with high oxygen requirements. On evaluation she had all the features of severe disease and she was given Inj. Remdesevir followed by Tocilizumab following which she had transient improvement in her clinical status for few days but again her condition started deteriorating with progressively increasing NIV and oxygen requirements. She was immediately transfused with convalescent plasma and steroid doses were hiked. Expert advice form Prof. Randeep Guleria, Director AIIMS and Prof Ritesh Agarwal, PGIMER, Chandigarh was also taken. However, she had progressive severe disease unresponsive to maximal medical therapy. She was put on mechanical ventilator on 1/8/20 but she continued to deteriorate with hypotension and multiorgan dysfunction and succumbed to her illness on 2.8.20 morning at 9:30 am (Statement from SGPGI hospital)

Low-cost moist heat treatment of N95 masks eliminates coronavirus: Study

According to the study, published in Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), moist heat treatment of masks for 60 min at 70 degrees Celsius in a humid condition did not damage their structure or affect function. "A single heat treatment rendered SARS-CoV-2 undetectable in all mask samples," the scientists, including those from the University of Toronto in Canada, wrote in the study.

Over 54,000 Covid-19 cases in India in single day, total tally crosses 17 lakh

India's Covid-19 tally crossed the 17-lakh mark on Sunday, just two days after it went past 16 lakh, with 54,735 cases being reported in a day, while the recoveries crossed the 11-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The total coronavirus cases surged to 17,50,723, while the death toll climbed to 37,364 with 853 people succumbing to the disease in a day, the data updated at 8 am showed. The recoveries have mounted to 11,45,629, while there are 5,67,730 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country presently.

Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Kamala Rani Varun dies of Covid

A UP govt source said she was undergoing treatment for Covid at a Lucknow hospital. On July 18, the minister tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital here. She was later shifted to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Kamal Rani was MLA from Ghatampur in Kanpur. She had also been Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha twice.

Covid spread can be contained in US universities with students testing every 2 days: Study

The study conducted by researchers from the Yale School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital was published in JAMA Network Open, the Washington Post reported. The study used computer simulations to show how the virus might spread among a hypothetical group of 5,000 students. In the simulation, it was assumed 4,900 students are coronavirus free while 100 were assumed to be infected.

Delhi red zones down by 219

Delhi government on Saturday reduced the number of containment zones from 715 to 496 following extensive assessment of the sealed areas in the last two days. “As desired by the chief minister, all the containment zones in the city were reviewed in the last two days with each district magistrate and surveillance team,” revenue minister Kailash Gahlot said.
