Karnataka: Govt schools can choose own uniform

MYSURU: When government schools reopen after the pandemic, they can decide their own uniform and procure the material locally. In a bid to decentralise the process given the logistical constraints imposed by Covid-19, the department of public instruction has empowered the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) to choose a uniform for students of classes 1 to 8. The kids will get a new set of clothes once schools reopen.
A circular issued by the DPI on July 29 says SDMCs have been given the power to change the colour and pattern of the uniform. They will have to procure the uniform sets or material locally and distribute them to the students.
Each government school has an SDMC which is headed by parents of a student while the headmaster/headmistress is the convener. Each SDMC has a bank account held jointly by the SDMC chairman and headmaster into which developmental grants are credited.
Mysuru Rural BEO Krishna said funds have been released to all SDMCs. “The colour and design shall be decided by SDMCs. They can buy ready-to-wear clothes or get them stitched,” he said.
