Representative imageKOLKATA: The death of a 69-year-old woman led to tension at Vidyasagar State General Hospital in Behala on Saturday night.
A doctor, identified as Niladri Saha, was injured after the woman’s relatives reportedly attacked him and the hospital staff, alleging medical negligence.
A police force from Parnasree was stationed at the hospital till reports last came in.
According to the police, the patient — identified as Geeta Rani Mitra, a resident of Oxytown near Shakuntala Park — was brought to the hospital with some age-related illness. However, in the afternoon, she developed breathing problem.
“Soon, an oxygen cylinder was brought to give her respite. But we found that there was no oxygen in it. More oxygen cylinders were brought to her room but those, too, did not function,” alleged a relative. The cylinders, they claimed, were being changed by a part-time employee and no nurse or doctor responded to them when they asked for help.
A couple of hours later, Mitra passed away. The relatives first got into a heated argument with the staff. When the doctor tried to pacify the patient’s relatives, he too was attacked, alleged hospital authorities. The cops arrived within a few minutes and detained a few relatives of the patient.
