CHENNAI: An atmospheric disturbance over the southern peninsula could trigger moderate rain with lightning in the city over the weekend, according to weathermen.
It is seen as a precursor to the formation of a weather system that could activate monsoon rain in other parts of the country.
Next week, there could be a break from the intense spells the city experienced earlier this week as monsoon rains could pick up on the west coast leaving only short spells here.
For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast, “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Moderate rain with lightning is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36°C and 27°C for the city.”
N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said several districts including Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai are likely to receive moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning in the next 24 hours due to an upperair circulation.
Weather blogger Pradeep John said rain could be expected more on the outskirts including the catchment are-as of the city reservoirs like Cholavaram and Redhills as the westerlies are not strong enough to push the storms closer to the coast to bring rain over the core city areas.
“Around August 3 and 4, winds and monsoon will pick up in other regions like Karnataka, Mumbai and Cauvery catchment area. We will also get some spells, but they may come from fast-moving clouds. We could also enjoy some good breeze,” he said.
