New Delhi: As the world continues to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic, which is believed to have zoonotic origins, there is increased concern about food habits and practices.

In her book ‘For a Moment of Taste’, former CEO of PETA India Poorva Joshipura draws on investigations by her and other researchers into the treatment of animals as part of standard but shocking practices in the dairy and meat industries.

The book, published by Harper Collins India, will be released on 5 August on SoftCover, ThePrint’s e-venue to launch select non-fiction books.

‘For a Moment of Taste’ is a probing, in-depth exposé by Joshipura, a senior member of an affiliate of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which seems to show what happens to animals from birth until slaughter for meat.

It throws light on how today’s meat, egg and dairy production systems came to be, the current state of these industries in India, and the consequences of where they are headed if dietary trends do not change.

It also lays out the health and environmental impacts of the production and consumption of animal-based products.

This book is intended to allow readers to introspect on how foods we choose can help save animals’ lives, improve our health and preserve the planet.

The foreword of the book has been written by actor Richa Chadha.

Varda Mehrotra, executive director of the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organization, said the book was “powerful and blows the lid off meat, egg and dairy trade secrecy”.

“Through hard-hitting facts and disturbing accounts of farm and slaughterhouse visits, Poorva reveals we can save lives, including our own, and protect the Earth, with our plates,” said actor Dr Aditi Govitrikar, who is also a medical doctor.

Joshipura, former CEO of PETA India, has been raising awareness for over 20 years on the plight of animals used for food and other industries across the globe. She is the current senior vice-president of the International Operations with PETA Foundation, a member of the board of directors for PETA India, and former co-opted member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, a statutory body which operates under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India.
