Attempt to cap OIL’s Baghjan gas well fails

DIBRUGARH:The first attempt to cap the Baghjan gas well on Saturday failed after a 90-feet long athey wagon toppled during the final operation. The mishap came as a major disappointment for the Singapore-based Alert Disaster Control team who have been laying the groundwork for several weeks.
The well, owned by Oil India Limited (OIL), has been spewing out natural gas uncontrollably for 66 days. On Saturday, the first attempt to cap it was planned by hooking the blowout preventer with the athey wagon, an equipment for fighting oil field fires.
Although the reason for the mishap is not clear, a source said that miscalculation on the part of the engineers caused the equipment to topple as it was unable to bear the load.
OIL, in a statement, said that the reason behind the mishap is being ascertained for next course of action.
