47% of Gujarat’s cases in July alone

With 24 peaks, cases almost double in 31days

State reports 1,153 cases on Friday; overall tally reaches 61,438, with 28,795 in July; on June 30, there were only 620 cases which doubled in 31days

July has been a month of peaks, with a new high in terms of daily cases reported on 24 of 31 days of the month. Not surprisingly, the daily count in Gujarat has almost doubled since the end of last month. On June 30, there were 620 new cases of Covid-19, which almost doubled to 1,153 on July 31. The highest singleday jump of cases so far is 1,159, reported on July 30.

Friday was the 11th straight day of more than 1,000 cases across the state. The overall tally now stands at 61,438 of which 28,795 cases (46.8%) were in July alone. With 23 more patients succumbing to the infection during the day, the death toll has reached 2,441. July also saw Surat become the worst-hit by Covid-19, surpassing Ahmedabad.

It reported 8,240 cases this month, against 5,604 in Ahmedabad. On Friday, Surat reported 284 cases, followed by Ahmedabad with 176 cases. Ahmedabad's tally went up to 26,517 while its death toll has reached 1,597. Of the 176 cases, 140 were from city and 36 from rural parts .

Rest of Gujarat’s share soars

Alongside, other district too saw a surge in cases. On July 1, the 31districts barring Surat and Ahmedabad accounted for 259, or around 38%, of the 675 cases in the state that day. On July 31, they accounted for 688, or nearly 60% of the total 1,153 cases.

Vadodara, which is at the third position after Ahmedabad and Surat in terms of total number of cases, has seen a consistent increase in number of cases—from 57 on July 1to 94 on July 31. Friday was also the eighth straight day of cases above 90 in the district.

There were 42 new cases in Jamnagar, 40 in Mehsana and 29 in Morbi, highest for the three districts so far. Besides these, Bhavnagar reported 47 cases, Gandhinagar 40, Surendranagar 35, Amreli and Valsad 26 each, Bharuch and Panchmahals 21 each, Kutch 20, Gir-Somnath and Navsari 16 each, Banaskantha, Dahod and Kheda 14 each, Patan 13, Mahisagar 12 and Anand and Sabarkantha 11 each. No cases were reported from Chhota Udepur, Devbhumi Dwarka and Dangs. The remaining districts reported single-digit cases.

As per the state health department release, 833 persons also recovered and were discharged from different hospitals in the state during the same period, taking the number of such cases to 44,907.

Ayurveda OPD to be set up for BSF soldiers in Chiloda
The Border Security Force deployed on the Indo-Pak border will get Ayurveda OPD service by Ayush ministry in Gandhinagar. The service may be provided in other institutions and defence campuses on request, as per a government statement. So far, 30 BSF soldiers have been infected by coronavirus. The OPD service will be provided at the BSF Chiloda campus following request by BSF IG Gyanendra Malik to the state government.

Major hospitals to reserve beds for Covid warriors
In an important announcement for healthcare workers, the state government on Friday announced that all major hospitals would reserve beds for these corona warriors.

As per the announcement, hospitals with 100-bed capacity will reserve five beds and those with capacity higher than that would reserve 10 beds for doctors and other healthcare workers in private or government facilities.


In case the beds remain vacant, they will be made available to the general public. Several doctors and paramedics in the have contracted the infection in the past 4 months, with many even losing their lives.
