MANGALURU/UDUPI: A dozen Covid-19 related deaths in Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi on Saturday dampened spirits on a day that Covid cases slipped below the 300 mark. Both districts accounted for six deaths each on Saturday, taking the tally in DK to 159 and 35 in Udupi. Out of the 275 cases reported in the two districts, DK accounted for 139 and Udupi 136, taking the total active cases to 3,008 and 1,811, respectively.
In a change in the reporting format in district bulletin issued by the DK district administration, deputy commissioner K V Rajendra, while confirming the six deaths, said 91 of the 139 cases were reported in Mangaluru, 19 in Bantwal, 14 in Belthangady and 9 in Puttur taluks, and six patients were from other districts. In all, 54 patients were discharged during the day, taking the total number of those discharged to 2,685, Dr Rajendra said.
On reasons for the change in bulletin format, Dr Rajendra said that there is no need to create panic among people by going into details about comorbidities that patients who died, endured. “It will be the administration’s endeavour to keep people informed through media about the developing Covid-19 situation in a simple format,” Dr Rajendra said, adding the district as on date has recorded 5,852 positive cases, and active cases are being treated.
In Udupi, out of the 136 cases reported, 65 were from Udupi, 37 from Kundapura and 33 from Karkala, Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda, district health and family welfare officer, said. The positive patients include 70 male and 66 females, he said. The health authorities also discharged 100 patients during the day. A total 753 of the total active cases are in home isolation, Dr Sooda said, adding one of the patients admitted in a private hospital is from Davanagere.
