Neighbour arrested after 'deliberately-lit' house fire leaves man dead

A man has been killed and his neighbour arrested after what police have called a "deliberately-lit" house fire on the NSW South Coast late on Friday.

Emergency services responded to reports of a break-in and fire at a home on Leonard Street in Bomaderry, north of Nowra, about 10.40pm.

The home was well alight when police officers and Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived, and firefighters pulled one man unresponsive from the home.

Despite CPR attempts by paramedics, the man died at the scene. Another man was able to flee the home and was uninjured.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze – but not before it destroyed the home and a nearby vehicle.

Officers from the South Coast Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic police.

In a statement on Saturday afternoon, police described the fire as "deliberately lit".

About 12.35pm, officers arrested a 26-year-old man at a home on the same street as the burned-down house.

He was taken to Nowra Police Station and is assisting with inquiries.
