The Red Sox released a statement late Thursday mourning the passing of former manager John McNamara.


Boston captured the American League pennant under McNamara in 1986 and came one strike away from ending its decades-long World Series drought. The Red Sox ultimately fell to the Mets in seven games.

Boston captured the American League pennant under McNamara in 1986 and came one strike away from ending its decades-long World Series drought. The Red Sox ultimately fell to the Mets in seven games.


McNamara, who made his home in Nashville, was 88. He managed nearly 2,400 games in the big leagues, including from 1985-88 with the Red Sox. McNamara was named the Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America in 1986, piloting Boston to 95 wins and an A.L. East title.


McNamara is survived by his wife, Ellen, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and three of his children – Peggy, Susan and Mike. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Maureen.
