Mukesh Ambani's online grocery business JioMart primarily competes with China’s Alibaba-backed BigBasket, SoftBank-funded Grofers, Amazon Pantry, and Walmart-owned Flipkart Supermart.

JioMart App launched for both android and ios usersJioMart would soon expand to electronics, fashion, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, Ambani had said at Reliance’s 43rd AGM.

Mukesh Ambani’s digital grocery bet JioMart is perhaps scaling at a pace for its competitors to take a very hard look at their ventures. Orders for the e-grocery business, which is set to expand to other categories including electronics, fashion, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, has already soared to more than 4 lakh on a single day, Reliance Industries said on Thursday announcing its Q1 results. “Within a few weeks of launch, JioMart has already delivered over 400,000 orders on a single day, which is significantly higher than any other grocery home delivery company,” the company said in a statement. JioMart primarily competes with China’s Alibaba-backed BigBasket, SoftBank-funded Grofers, Amazon Pantry, and Walmart-owned Flipkart Supermart.

This comes 15 days after Reliance’s 43rd AGM wherein Mukesh Ambani had said that “within a few weeks of launch, we have reached over 250,000 orders a day”. JioMart was announced by Mukesh Ambani last year as its new commerce initiative while the website was launched on May 23 in 200 cities followed by the Android and iOS apps that were launched nearly two weeks back. The app has already crossed 10 lakh downloads on Android with a rating of 4.3 stars on the Google Play Store versus 3.5 stars on the iOS App Store. Downloads for apps on the App Store are not shown.

JioMart has made deliveries free for all orders and doesn’t require any minimum order value, unlike other players. For instance, Amazon delivers Pantry orders without any cost for transactions above Rs 799, while Flipkart asks for at least Rs 600 shopping on Supermart to place an order and Rs 1,200 for free delivery. Grofers, on the other hand, provides free delivery for orders worth Rs 800 or above and BigBasket delivers without fee for orders upward of Rs 1,200. Reliance has also started offering its Reliance Retail’s loyalty programme — RelianceOne or ROne to JioMart customers as well to earn points and redeem them against transactions.

Flipkart, which hasn’t been able to scale as much as other players, is now aggressively upping its grocery play with the recent acquisition of Walmart India that operates 28 cash-and-carry format wholesale stores. The company, on Tuesday, had also announced the launch of its hyperlocal delivery service Flipkart Quick beginning with Bengaluru. Customers can, as of now, order goods from categories including grocery, dairy, meat, mobiles, electronics accessories, stationery items, and home accessories for home delivery within 90 minutes. Flipkart would charge Rs 29 as a minimum delivery fee.
