Representative imageBHIWANDI: The Food and Drug Administration Department has seized vitamin C health supplements worth Rs 6 lakh from a godown of a health product company in Bhiwandi on Tuesday night.
The FDA officials said that the health company is registered under FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) is authorised to manufacture Vitamin C supplement only up to 40 grams for adults and maximum up to 60 grams for breastfeeding women. However, the company was seen selling higher dosage Vitamin C tablets up to 1000mg which is illegal.
Sunil Bhardwaj, joint commissioner of FDA vigilance department said, "As company violates ICMR's guidelines and violated FSSAI rules our team upon getting information about company selling high dosage vitamin C claiming dosage of 1000 milligram our team raided godown and seized 890 units of worth Rs 6 lakh".
Bhardwaj said, "After seizing health supplements the team have sent samples into the laboratory to find its content of products and as per findings further action would be taken in to matter".
Bhardwaj said this is the second such raid in the last one month. Last month our team seized one more health products related company and had seized over Rs 50 lakh vitamin C tablets.
An official said that health products related companies which are registered under Drugs and Cosmetics Act are authorised to produce higher dosage vitamin C tablets while Health Supplements company registered under FSSAI Act have limitations.
An FDA officials said that since Vitamin C boost immunity doctors nowadays looking at Covid-19 in absence of any medicine to cure it recommending patients Vitamin C tablets which boost immunity of people to fight Covid-19 resulting looking at rise in demand for this health supplements companies by making false claims selling many such vitamin C tablets.
