The Maharashtra government announced extension of the general lockdown until July 31 with an aim to contain the Covid-19 surge. The notification issued by the state government has also restricted inter-district travel between municipal corporations within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to that for office purposes and essential activities like medical reasons.

*The Mumbai Metropolitan Region accounts for 2.32 lakh cases, followed by Pune division that has registered 94,961 cases. Aurangabad division has the third highest with 16,234 cases.
*Maharashtra’s reported 298 deaths on Wednesday, equalling its single-day highest toll previously seen on July 23. The death toll now is 14,463.
*Maharashtra’s had taken 96 days to reach the first one lakh cases on June 12 following the detection of the index cases on March 9. Between June 13 and July 4 (22 days), the state crossed two lakh cases. The third lakh cases were added in 14 days. The last one lakh cases were added in merely 11 days.
