Representative imageCHENNAI: Dr Rubaiya Sherif, daughter of former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, on Tuesday night approached the Abiramapuram police saying she had been receiving obscene calls on her mobile phone.
The calls, made from three numbers, including international, had been troubling her since Monday and she had blocked the caller, she said. Police registered a case under IPC sections 294 (B) (using obscene language) and 354 (d) (stalking). “We are trying to trace the caller,” said an officer.
Dr Rubaiya Sherif, 55, and her husband Shoukath Sherif, who moved to Chennai a decade ago owing to the terror threat in J&K, reside at Kesavaperumalpuram. In 2015, Shoukath received a letter asking him to deliver ₹5 lakh to a grocery shop in Royapuram, failing which he and his family members would be killed. Police detained the grocer and released him after finding his handwriting didn’t match that in the letter. On December 8, 1989, a few days after her father took over as Union home minister, Dr Rubaiya was kidnapped in Kashmir. The abduction made international news as India set free some militants for her release.
