AI expected to boost India's annual growth by 1.3 pc, says Niti paper

The government may fund specific research projects in responsible Artificial Intelligence and introduce ethics of AI into the university curriculum as the new-age technology is expected to boost India's annual growth rate by 1.3 per cent by 2035, according to a discussion paper by Niti Aayog. The draft paper titled 'Towards Responsible#AIForAll' said there is a potential of large scale adoption of AI in a variety of social sectors.

National Education Policy 2020

  • The National Education Policy (NEP), approved by the union cabinet on Wednesday, reflected sweeping reforms in school and higher education including teaching up to at least Grade 5 in "mother tongue or regional language" and a new 5+3+3+4 school curriculum with 12 years of schooling and three years of anganwadi or pre-schooling.
  • The policy lays emphasis on skilling and use of technology, saying it will be used in education planning, teaching, learning and assessment.
  • The policy calls for assessment reforms with 360-degree holistic progress card, tracking student progress for achieving learning outcomes and emphasises the creation of an academic bank of credits to facilitate the transfer of credits

Unlock 3 guidelines: No schools, metro, cinema till Aug 31; Gyms allowed

  • The nationwide Unlock 3 guidelines were on Wednesday issued by the government, opening up more activities outside the containment zones, but schools, colleges, metro rail service, cinema halls along with bars will continue to remain shut till August 31 and political and religious gatherings will also remain prohibited.
  • For the first time since the coronavirus lockdown came into force on March 25, the government has allowed opening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums from August 5 for which separate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be issued by the Health Ministry.
  • After extensive consultation with states and union territories, it has been decided that schools, colleges and coaching institutions will remain closed till August 31, the Union Home Ministry said on a statement. However, restrictions on movement of individuals during night (night curfew) have been removed, according to the ministry. The Unlock 3 guidelines will come into force from August 1 and strict enforcement of lockdown in containment zones will continue till August 31.

  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday announced delinking of hotels from hospitals in view of the “improving” COVID-19 situation in the national capital.
  • Kejriwal said all beds in such hotels, which were last month attached to hospitals to work as COVID care centres, were lying vacant for the past many days.
  • The decision was taken after the chief minister reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the city.

Andhra reports highest ever single-day Covid cases of 10,093 on Wednesday, crosses 1.2L mark, suffers 65 deaths

Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday reported the highest ever single-day new Covid positive cases of 10,093, the highest in India on Wednesday, taking the total to 120,390 cases. India on Wednesday reported 48,513 new Covid positive cases, taking the total to 15,31,669 cases. The state over the last 24 hours suffered 65 covid deaths, which takes the total death toll to 1,213 so far. The state reported 2,784 persons recovered and discharged to take the total discharged so far to 55,406 persons while it saw 63,711 active cases by Wednesday. AP tested 70,584 samples over the last 24 hours, the highest single-day tests, that take the total to 18,20,009 tests thus far, the fourth-highest in India after Tamil Nadu (24,75,866), Uttar Pradesh (20,33,089) and Maharashtra (19,72,346).

In Mumbai's slums, over half of population probably infected with coronavirus, survey says

  • More than half the people living in Mumbai's sprawling slums are probably infected with the novel coronavirus, which suggests the metropolis could be heading toward herd immunity, a government official and a health expert said on Wednesday, citing a recent survey.
  • India has the world's third-highest caseload of the virus, behind the United States and Brazil, and health officials have been hoping to flatten the curve or reduce the incidence of infections in the big cities that are driving the growth.
  • About 57% of slum-dwellers have tested positive for antibodies for the coronavirus, from a random sample size of 7,000 people, according to the survey jointly conducted by Mumbai's municipality, government think tank Niti Aayog and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

IndiGo posts Rs 2,844 crore quarterly loss

  • InterGlobe Aviation on Wednesday reported a net loss of Rs 2,844.3 crore for the three months ended June as disruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic significantly impacted the airline.
  • The parent of the country's largest airline IndiGo had a net profit of Rs 1,203.1 crore in the year-ago period.
  • In the first quarter of the current financial year, the airline's total income declined 88 per cent to Rs 1,143.8 crore. In the year-ago period, the same stood at Rs 9,786.9 crore, according to a regulatory filing.
  • Revenue from operations declined 91.9 per cent to Rs 766.7 crore in the quarter under review, compared to the same period a year ago.

UK strikes pact for 60 million doses of COVID-19 experimental vaccine

  • The UK government on Wednesday announced an early access agreement with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Sanofi Pasteur for an estimated 60 million doses of an experimental new vaccine being tested to combat COVID-19.
  • The agreement with Britain's GSK and France's Sanofi, which combined have among the largest vaccine manufacturing capabilities in the world, will supply the UK with 60 million doses of their vaccine based on existing DNA-based technology used to produce Sanofi's flu vaccine.
  • While it remains uncertain as to which, if any, of the anti-coronavirus vaccines under various stages of development around the world will ultimately work, the British government said the latest deal helps grow the country's portfolio of vaccine candidates and adds to previous agreements.

SpiceJet posts Rs 807 crore loss for March quarter

Budget carrier SpiceJet on Wednesday reported a net loss of Rs 807.1 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2020, owing to the coronavirus-induced lockdown that led to travel restrictions. It had posted a net profit of Rs 56.3 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year, the airline said in a statement. For the full financial year 2019-20, its net loss stood at Rs 934.8 crore as against a net loss of Rs 316.1 crore in 2018-19.
