Surat: Not allowed to watch TV, use mobile phone, 16-yr-old girl ends life

SURAT: A 16-year-old girl ended life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence on Tuesday in Katargam area of Gujarat's Surat. Preliminary police investigation revealed that the girl was advised to stop using mobile phone and watch TV due to a complaint of headache. Her parents did not allow her to watch TV or use the phone following doctor's advice due to which she took the extreme step when family members were not present at home.
Jahanvi Maru, a student of class X, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room. Her parents went to buy vegetables while she was at home with her grandmother. She told her grandmother that she is going in room to change clothes. Later when her parents returned home and as she did not come out they broke open the door only to find her hanging to the ceiling fan. She was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Police investigation so far revealed that Jahanvi was complaining of headache for the last few weeks. She also complained of congestion in chest. She was taken to SMIMER hospital for a medical examination when doctors instructed her to stop watching TV and avoid using mobile phone, that she used for online studies.
"Her parents did not allow her to watch TV or use mobile phone since the doctor advised complete rest. She also used to stay upset due to congestion in chest and due to these reasons she believed to have taken the extreme step," said a police officer in Katargam police station.
