SCB officials inspect garbage transit point at Trimulgherry in Secunderabad Cantonment on Wednesday. HYDERABAD: A decade-old garbage dumping problem in Secunderabad Cantonment will come to an end soon.
On Wednesday, chief executive officer of Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), B Ajith Reddy, inspected a garbage transit point at Trimulgherry. Senior sanitation officials of SCB health & sanitation wing, accompanied with the CEO. Ajith Reddy, took charge as CEO, recently and reviewed the process of solid waste management (SWM) in the cantonment.
The Cantonment Board is utilising an-acre open space at Mahatma Gandhi Community Hall, situated amid residential colonies, for the past five years, as they do not have alternate arrangements to dump the garbage. From here, the SCB trucks transport waste to GHMC’s landfill at Jawaharnagar dumping yard, about 10 KMs away from the Cantonment.
The sanitation wing is lifting nearly 120 tonnes of garbage per day in the Cantonment civilian areas and another 20 tonnes from the military areas.
The CEO also enquired about alternate defence land, which was allotted at Dairy Farm at Bowenpally, on the outskirts of the Cantonment last year. The Cantonment Board explained to him that they are waiting for the ‘Ministry of Defence’ (MoD)’s nod to use the land for garbage dumping.
For the past five years, local residents also held protests regarding shifting of garbage transit points from Trimulgherry, due to stinking emitting during the rainy season.
SCB CEO asked the officials concerned to speed up efforts regarding defence land allotment to resolve the garbage problems, said SCB senior superintendent (SWM), M Devender told TOI.
