TYSON PPV VIEW MISPRICED?
Mike Tyson's return to boxing - an 8-round charity fight v Roy Jones Jr - will cost pay-per-view viewers $49.99 (R825) it has been revealed. The fight scheduled for 12 September will be more of an exhibition rather than a typical fight-to-kill Tyson explosion ... unless he gets angry and tears up the script ...
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Now I am a big fan of Mike Tyson BUT I think the promoters have seriously mispriced this one. Who, under the current economic environment, would want to pay that much to watch two over 50s engage in a light-hearted exhibition, with nothing on the line, and no trademark Tyson knockout to look forward to? Would you? Comments below.
KHABIB V GAETHJE TITLE FIGHT SET FOR OCTOBER 24
UFC boss Dana White has confirmed that the much-anticipated lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje will take place at an as-of-yet undisclosed location on 24 October. The fight was originally provisionally slated for September but the unfortunate passing of Khabib's father and trainer, Abdulmanap, from Covid-19 caused a delay.
"His father was a hero to him. He loved his father. They had a very, very close relationship, and it was very hard on him," said White.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: There had been talk of the undefeated Khabib (28-0) retiring so this is good news. Gaethje is one of the few fighters (another being Tony Ferguson) who analysts believe would have any hope of dethroning the irrepressible Khabib. THAT would certainly be a fight worth paying to watch.
SPEAKING OF BOXING AND UFC ...
Mike Tyson has been hypothetically matched up against any fighter who has ever been a champion at any form of combat. The latest "ask-Tyson-if-he-would-have beaten-fill-in-the-blank-opponent"?
Conor McGregor.
Tyson's response was as short and fast as one of his trademark uppercuts ... "I'd kick his a** anyway!"
Tyson did have some praise for McGregor to cushion the blow saying that he deserved credit for going 10 rounds with Floyd Mayweather ... "'He never really had a boxing match in his life, right. He went 10 rounds with the greatest fighter in the last 100 years of boxing."
