Representative imagePATIALA: A Ropar jail warden has been arrested for allegedly supplying drugs to inmates. Officials said jail warden Mandeep Singh was placed under suspension immediately after his arrest and will be dismissed from service after orders from the higher authorities.
Officials said the accused had even refused to undergo dope test while another accused, a jail inmate identified as Sukhvir Singh, was found intoxicated in his dope test reports. They said narcotic tablets were seized from an inmate who was asked to carry cylinders from a jail store on a pushcart and on frisking was found carrying narcotic tablets.
Jail superintendent Jaswant Singh Thind said, "We keep cylinders in a store and on Sunday, an inmate was asked to carry a cylinder to the kitchen. The inmate, Sukhvir Singh, had hidden around 10 narcotic tablets near the chain of the pushcart. He was frisked by assistant jail superintendents Prabhjot Singh and Chaman Lal and found with tablets.
"Asked how he managed to get these tablets inside jail, the accused revealed that the jail warden had ordered him to bring these tablets near another barrack, where he was supposed to supply to other inmates. Mandeep Singh was immediately arrested and then suspended while a case against both the accused is registered at Ropar city police station under sections of NDPS Act and Prisons Act. Accused Sukhvir Singh is convicted for 20 years in a murder case and was near completion of his jail term."
