An adorable cat that was thrown out the window of a moving car is making an incredible recovery - and has been given a sweet new name.

The male ginger tabby cat was found with critical injuries on Barrenjoey Road, Newport in Sydney's Northern Beaches at about 5.30am on Friday.

He was taken to Northside Emergency Veterinary Specialists where he underwent surgery.

'Big Ginge is getting stronger every day,' the clinic wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

'Even with such severe facial injuries and fractures he’s managed to eat a little bit for us this morning, which we are all very excited about.'

The clinic joined forces with SAFE Animal Rehoming to look for a comfortable and happy home for Big Ginge.

Social media users thanked all those involved in Big Ginge's surgery and care following the disgusting act of animal abuse.

Big Ginge was lucky to survive the horrific incident.

Vet Heather Russell said Big Ginge suffered grim injuries after being thrown from the moving car.

'Yesterday [Friday] he had a CT scan which showed that he didn't have any internal injuries, but he does have really severe facial trauma,' Ms Russell said last week.

'We've had to put a feeding tube into his oesophagus so we can give his face and mouth the chance to heal. He's very swollen and sore, he'll be in with us for about a week I'd say.'

Ms Russell believes the car the cat was thrown from was driving at '60/70km/h' due to the serious injuries sustained.

'He's pretty badly injured to be honest, he's had specialist surgery yesterday [Friday], he's had the works, he's been a lucky boy, but we expect he'll have a good chance of recovery.'
